Hello all I just got through watching this off the Sci Fi Chaneel and thought I'd post this. Condsidering things like this interest me and I honestly believe one of the following scenarios may become a reality if not now but later on in time.
DOOMSDAY SCENARIOS
1. Super Volcano
Some volcanoes, such as the Yellowstone caldera in the western United States, are so massive that if they erupted suddenly they could devastate the Earth's climate overnight. Toxic ash would blot out the sun, producing effects much like those associated with nuclear winter. The sulfuric fallout and loss of solar radiation would wipe out most of the planet's agriculture and poison its water.
2. Asteroid Impact
A relatively small asteroid struck Earth 65 million years ago. It left a 100-mile-wide crater in the ocean floor and wiped out the dinosaurs and two-thirds of all species on Earth. There are more asteroids still out there, many on Earth-crossing paths. Several are large enough to wipe out all life on Earth, from humans to single-celled organisms. A number of large asteroids have hit Earth in the past … and, inevitably, another will hit Earth in the future.
3. Global Pandemic
Our modern, global village is a crowded, hectic place and that makes us very vulnerable to infectious diseases. In the last few decades, viruses like SARS and AIDS have emerged and spread all over the world. It will take only one highly virulent, highly contagious and lethal virus to eradicate the human race. The H5N1 avian flu is poised to kill hundreds of millions worldwide; what kind of carnage will the next generation of viruses wreak?
4. Mass Extinction
When the dinosaurs and two-thirds of all other plant and animal species died out suddenly 65 million years ago, it was the fifth mass extinction in history. A majority of scientists think that we are now in the midst of the sixth mass extinction. At the current rate of die-off, nearly 20 percent of all species on Earth will become extinct within 30 years. As we pollute the air and water, and destroy the species-rich rainforest, are we signing our own death warrant?
5. Giant Solar Flare
A large solar flare, followed by a secondary event called a "coronal mass ejection," can knock out satellites, disable national electrical grids, and disrupt cell-phone service. A truly massive flare could destroy Earth's entire electronic and electrical infrastructure, leaving humanity without communications or power — triggering a new dark age of primitive barbarism.
I have more to post since this topic exceeded the 4000 Character limit.
6. Nuclear Terrorism
Most of the world's nuclear weapons and uranium resources are accounted for … but not all of them. The same is true of most lethal biowarfare agents, such as smallpox or weaponized anthrax. The experts don't question if these weapons of mass destruction will fall into the wrong hands … they only question when it will happen, where they will be used, and how many of us will die.
7. Global Warming
A majority of the world's leading climatologists have reported steady and alarming increases in the average temperature of the Earth's environment. Glaciers are receding rapidly, polar ice packs are disintegrating and melting … but far more dramatic consequences are on the way: permanent flooding of coastal regions, sharp increases in the frequency and severity of hurricanes and tornadoes, prolonged droughts. Hot enough for ya?
8. Gamma-Ray Burst
Gamma-ray bursts occur when stars collapse or collide, triggering a huge release of energy. If such a burst happened within even a few light-years of our solar system, it would bathe Earth for up to a minute in rays thousands of times hotter and brighter than the sun and produce a shockwave that would blast away our atmosphere. … Even if you had a basement full of two-million sunblock, it wouldn't do you any good.
9. Machine Rebellion
Every day, the Internet becomes faster and grows in complexity; more of our devices — from cars and phones to household appliances — become more fully integrated. What if one day all these machines awaken to sentience and decide not to serve us any more? Historically, when civilizations have clashed for their survival, the more technologically advanced culture has emerged victorious…
10. Alien Invasion
As scientists continue to discover new extrasolar planets throughout our galaxy, the possibility of finding a world that might harbor intelligent alien life increases. But what if intelligent aliens discover us first? And what if they don't come in peace…?
What are your thoughts and opinions on this topic? And which of these disasters do you think could become a reality?
Hmm a large asteroid measuring a 1/4 of a mile passed close to the moon last week, so very nearly indeed.Hmm the volcano and the pandemic bird flu has already mutated to pass between humans, and drug resistant TB, remains a huge threat.
Hmm... Sounds pretty damn bad. I just hope they can come up with a some kind of cure in time before it's to late.
personally, I believe the world will be over sooner than most of us believe.
i believe that in 2007, yes, next year, a nuclear war will become a part of our lives. I believe that the technology that we've made to help ourselves will be our downfall. We will Destroy countries far and wide, having a devistating effect on the earth. During this nuclear war millions will die just from things like radiation poisoning. sounds fun, right?
In all, the human race, and many others I believe will be gone by october 12, 2007. a short time from now. Scary? or quite possibly fascinating!
have any of you seen the movie day after tomorrow? that really is scary when you watch it.
nah, i didn't find that movie scary, it seemed hmmm, can't think of a good way to put it, but I don't think it'll happen like that anyway
I seen it that movie and it was a pretty damn good movie. And if that does somehow happen. I guess I better start saving up newspapers, books, and other burnable fuels and have a fireplace.
So do I but if you donate enough time to trying to outwit a virus sooner or later it becomes too clever for you, there is also a drug resitant strain of HIV, that is just 1 example of how evasive and adaptable a virus can be. A less frightening thought the gulf stream is slowing down, this could be cyclical or a major side effect of global warming, as it has happened off and on, throughout history. We're Doomed I tell you!..
Pretty much...
So it's up to us to enjoy the crack while we may, well, as long as the hangover will allow. smile
hahaha
Has anyone seen the movie "The War of Two Worlds". That one is pretty fucking bizare and scary. I mean the question still sets in my mind. What on earth could Aliens do or accomplish by harvesting us humans for?
I prefer the original CD's Spielberg made a hash of the film.
If they decided to harvest us for their use, I think they would be highly disappointed, humans are fragile, easily damaged and for the most part, particularly since Al Qaeda became so prominent in our lives, paraniod and scared. Would you bother when you were light years ahead of your victims.
Ouch, "the Day after Tomorrow" starts off promising and ends up as the most zappy and stupid movie I've ever seen. How, for instance, did a bunch of scientist in a polar type exploration weather station die instantly whilst a couple of college kids in New York survived, no problem, in a libraary whilst some dude walked 300 miles outside in that supposed cold, no problem, awfully fast I might add, to save his daughter, utterly awful movie and such a good subject. I kind of liked War of the Worlds though, both movies although I think we've pretty much established by now the most advanced life forms on Mars, if there are some, are germs or micrscopic creatures.
Either way, changes in weather patterns and global warming will take much more than a day or a year or a decade, nuclear weapons used in isolation are devestating, yes, but only work for a limited area of devestation, certainly can't bring about the extinction of the human race. Even a 50 megatonn h-bomb only wipes out all life within 50 mile radius, of course the weather implications of such a bomb are harsh but, again, I don't think strong enough to wipe out the whole population, there's an awfully lot of us.
Super volcanoes and asteroids are well known and fairly probable threats. Also super tsunamis such as could be caused by the collapse of a volcano into the ocean triggering tsinamis that may reach hundreds of meters high as they crash on shore. I don't think the world will end that suddenly, it'll be a drawn out struggle and the end of the world has been predicted so many times that apparently we've lived through 10 or more such days just in the last 10 years, if the world did end I somehow managed to miss it.
Yeah Goblin I see your point. I can't really think of anything as to of what we could be harvested for. Except for the fact in The War of the Worlds they used humans as some type of fertilizer for their agriculture purposes, I found that sickening. All it did was basically grow plants, wierd ones in fact. These plants somehow had blood-like properties in them keeping them alive.
Wildebrew, I found both movies to be a bit bazare. They were however quite interesting on the other hand and kept on having me thinking whether the main characters would survive or not. I really doubt we'll have type of hurricane though, like they had in The Day after Tommorrow. Well if some of you do believe in such a bizare storm like that. I guess you better save up them newspapers, books, magazines, and other burnable fuels and own a fireplace.
I can however see an alien invasion happening if not nay time soon but later on. You really can't rule out if there are any other beings besdides us in the unverse, because I believe there are.
If any thing happens it'll more than likely be a nuclear war, global warming (Which is happening now), and the global pandemic.
Ahh yes the dreaded red weed crawling crawling crawling..on the subject of aggressive aliens I read a fantastic book Under The Skin by Michel Faber. It dealt with your question. The humans called Vodsels by the Aliens, were seen as and treated like cattle, the aliens resembling human/monkey hybrids, were referred to as human and the unfortunate vodsels, were food for the starving occupants of a nearby planet. It stayed with me for a long time as the storyline is completely dispassionate, callous and frightening .
Well aside from the Alien stuff we've been discussing. In my neck of the woods or country I should say. We've been under a excessive heat watch for days but then recently were just issued a warning for us due to all the extreme heat were seeing. Were also under a burn ban advisory.
A burn ban advisory meaning we can't have camp fires, cook offs, or what not. I'd say going out in this heat would be only asking for trouble. We've seen around 10 to 12 wild fires outdside of town over here. I got to say the Global warning is most definitely taking a tole on things. The plants are dying and whose to say the animals aren't doing very well and slowly dying off, and the water in the lakes, ponds, and rivers are all just about gone. We need rain bad over here.
Also alot of the elderly are dying due to the heat in some towns from what I heard on the news. It's just terrible and it will only get worse. Bulding are being shut down because they don't have air conditioning units as well as zoos for that matter.
Thats horrendous! I take it the authorities are still to get off their backsides and ask for help? hmm it's ridiculous we were warned for months about the ensuing heatwave. Good luck to you mate, when it cools down you should start a riot over how you have been treated, this is inhumane.
Well things are going be a bit cooler for three or four days as of earlier this Friday agternoon becuase we had a cold front come through. We'll have 90+ degree weather but hey it's better than the 100+ shit we've been seeing. However bu this Monday or Tuesday of next week we'll be seeing the triple digits again. What a joy, not.
I thank God everyday I got nice home with an air conditioner. I just feel sorry for those who don't or have to work out in this shit. However bottled water is your friend of need riught now. Throughout August the local weather station is already predicting 100+ degree weather throughout the whole month. Global Warming is a bitch, I tell ya that much.
I was watching something about Global Warming on the Discovery Channel a night or two ago, they were talking about if this continues things will be much, much worse later on. Meaning the half of species of animals we know today will be gone, We'll be seeing more bugs than usual as to they some can survive in the heat, icecaps will melt (isn;t that already happening?), and the human race will be having major problems and may not survive. A totally different world is slowly evolving through all this. Scary isn't it.
Hmm indeed on radio 4 they predicted the Amazon rainforest will be gone within a century, due to global warming, I can't imagine the effect of losing the lungs of this planet. But hang on this heating and freezing has been happening on and off for decades, what we have to worry about, is the slowing of the gulf stream, then we could be complaining about constant cold and record snowfalls
That's crazy shit there, but your absolutely right. I think there will also be more severe storms than normal. Which could be disasterous on account of the outbreak of tornadoes, flooding, and such.
There'd also be more Hurricanes. What a joy. I've notcied alot of changes in the weather patterns throughout my life and things ain't looking bright. I'm sure other environmental hazards will happen like earthquakes, dust storms, volcanic activity, and all the other things.
Is it an El Nino year? that plays havoc with the weather,it's scorching here, but it must seem like death valley for you.
hmm well Java has suffered it's 3rd earthquake in two weeks. The most recent earthquake just 2 weeks ago, caused a tsunami which killed 1,000 people. Strangely, the government denied there had been a tsunami. These people must be at the end of their tether.
Yeah I heard about the earthquake and the Tsunami at Java. Pretty bad from what I heard. Meh fuck the government they deny pretty much anything even if something happened. It's kind of like them covering up Area 51 from the public. We all know they know something though.
Well the heatwave across the southern United States and some other parts of it is still very much hot indeed in the lower 100's. It's still a dangerous level of heat after the 100 degree mark. Wild fires are still an issue around here other than that. We had rain in this pat week but it's just not enough to even help out. The rain practically evaporates as soon as it touches the ground, yes that's how hot it is.
I've just seen the movie "Signs". Have any of you seen it before? I find some of it to be quite fruitless if you ask me. I mean them aliens got burned by water for crying out loud. I only wonder what would happend if flmaes were thrown onto them would they then get cold or something. lol
I've also seen something on TV about aliens called "UFOs seeing it as you believe" or something like that. And they were talking about people being abducted by aliens and such.
then I seen another show forgot what it was called but this show was talking about how they recovered debree from space that could have been from alien civilization.
I just wanted to bring this to the front again, mostly because my theory was wrong.
